A very active Catholic Identity Committee works closely with school parents and parishioners to plan and execute a Thanksgiving Food Drive, a winter Coat Drive, and an Easter Food Drive. All items help support our St. Joseph Food Pantry and our sharing parish, Assumption B.V.M Church in the Little Village Neighborhood of Chicago. Students support The Women’s Center in Chicago through the Baby Bottle Project each October. ICSJ also participates in the Operation Rice Bowl Project in March to support third world countries with food and farming materials. Very active Girls Scout Troops also lead various service projects throughout the school year. Recent efforts have supported organizations such as the Navajo Water Project, Nothing But Nets, PAWS, and Misericordia. IC-SJ Food Pantry The ICSJ Food Pantry was started 40 years ago by a former IC School teacher and the Community Relations Coordinator for Immaculate Conception Church. The Food Pantry originally supported the residents Cabrini Green. Not only could residents receive food and clothing, but they would also receive assistance in locating jobs or finding larger household items. The Food Pantry is located in the basement of the old St. Joseph School at 1065 N. Orleans Street. Many ICSJ school service projects support this longstanding cornerstone of our community. Service Groups ICSJ Students from the Class of 2016 recently formed The S.O. W.H.A.T Club (Serving Others Will Help All Thrive). Their goal was to educate and organize their peers to participate in community service. The club meetings and service projects are supervised by two faculty members and the school nurse. The 2015-2016 S.O. W.H.A.T Club projects included organizing a park and school ground clean-up in honor of Earth Day at Seward Park, visiting with patients in the Oncology Department at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, organizing a “Jeans for Wishes” drive to benefit the Make-A-Wish Foundation, and creating PSA videos stressing the importance of being a steward of the Earth. Annual Service Project All ICSJ students and faculty members unite each January on a service project in conjunction with Catholic Schools Week. Recent projects have included making Valentine cards for residents of the Ray Graham Society, a facility for adults with physical and developmental disabilities, and hosting a book drive during which ICSJ students supplied the Immaculate Conception School in South Chicago with books for their classroom libraries and handmade bookmarks for each of their students.
