Tot Program

The Immaculate Conception-St. Joseph Tot Program is the ideal transition toddlers need to begin their evolution from a home-concentrated environment to a school-based setting. Our Tot Program allows the parent or caregiver to accompany their child as they experience their first classroom environment. The teacher will prepare a warm, welcoming, and safe environment where children can learn and grow through play and exploration. Children and caregivers will experience circle time, playtime, snack and story time, as well as opportunities for gross motor exploration. The ICSJ Tot Program allows caregivers a unique opportunity twice-per-week to foster the growth, independence, and social skills of their child.

Tot classes take place at our Hill Street Campus in the fully self-contained preschool classroom. The campus has an indoor gross motor play area, diaper changing stations, and the classroom has a child-sized bathroom.

Participation in the ICSJ Tot Program does not guarantee admission into ICSJ preschool.

The ICSJ Tot Program is led by seasoned teacher, Ashley Stephens. Earning her Early Childhood Education Degree from DePaul University, Mrs. Stephens has over 8 years of teaching experience in preschool, Kindergarten and 1st Grade. Mrs. Stephens has a strong passion for working within early childhood development and enjoys working with, and teaching young children.

Class Size

The Tot Program serves a maximum of 10 students along with each child’s caregiver. The number of students in the class is intentionally small allowing our tots, their caregiver and the teacher the opportunity to comfortably interact with one another throughout the duration of the class. The Tot Program is designed for one caregiver and their toddler. In the case of twin siblings, the 1:2 ratio of one caregiver to two children is acceptable. The program cannot accommodate younger/older siblings.

Parent/Caregiver Involvement

The caregiver accompanying his/her tot is an essential component to the success of the program. The caregiver is asked to engage, encourage, and foster their child’s learning throughout the class. The caregiver is also asked to supervise the child at all times. As the toddlers demonstrate independence and readiness, typically beginning in March, parents/caregivers will transition out of the classroom and into an adjacent room, allowing the child to begin building necessary separation skills.
